About us

We are a fun and friendly club that has been going strong for over 30 years, bringing people together to enjoy a game of badminton.

We currently have around 30 members with a range of standards from individuals who haven’t played in years, to current or ex county players, and of all ages. We are always on the look out for new members – particularly ladies and want to encourage as many people to get involved in the future of the sport and be a part of Wellington Badminton Club.

Please find our frequently asked questions below to help you decide if we are the right club for you.

Frequently asked questions

We play on Wednesday evenings all year round from 7:30pm to 10pm. We do lose the occasional evening if Christmas or New Year fall around a Wednesday or if the college are using the hall (this is very rare).

We can be found at the Wellington Health and Fitness Club which is in the grounds of Wellington College. There are shower facilities and a great sports bar where we tend to socialise after club night which is open until 11:30pm. The badminton is played in an excellent sports hall which houses eight courts – we have four courts throughout the season. If there is a home match, club night players will have two or three courts available throughout the evening.

We play a good social and competitive level of ladies, mens and mixed doubles from intermediate to advanced level with teams in various divisions in the Aldershot and Camberley league.

Our intermediate level assumes you have some previous experience playing badminton in a club or league environment and have a good foundation of both technical ability and tactical knowledge of the game. If you are unsure of your level or haven’t played in a while, we still encourage you to come along and try us out and we can both see if we are the right club for you. Unfortunately we do not accept beginners.

Yes, we welcome those who would like to try out our club to see if it’s the right fit for you. We understand that it is not always easy finding a club that combines the right standard of play with an atmosphere that you enjoy.

We will normally welcome you as a visitor for up to three weeks where we can then both decide whether full membership is right for you. Please contact us to arrange a time for your visit – we look forward to hearing from you!

Members pay monthly or yearly, which covers courts, shuttles and affiliation to the local leagues and Badminton England if you are selected to play in the league. We currently charge an additional £2 for each home and away match if you play in a league.

We try to keep things relatively informal, but like most clubs, we have a committee, a constitution and a child protection policy (as we welcome members who are under 18).

We operate a ‘peg’ system for picking matches during the club night and this provides members with a variety of games throughout the evening.

We usually only play doubles – both level and mixed. If you want to play predominantly singles, then we are probably not the club for you. However, if you want to play the odd singles game towards the end of a club night when the courts are less busy, that is fine.

We use good quality Yonex Aerosensa 20 or 30 feather shuttles depending on shuttlestock and the time of year.

Our Committee

Each year we elect a committee to ensure the smooth running of our club. The key members for the 2022-23 season are:
